Introduction

The Apostle Paul’s words in Colossians 4:12 encapsulate the depth and discipline of intercessory prayer — a spiritual labor carried out in love. Speaking of Epaphras, Paul writes:

“He is always wrestling in prayer for you, that you may stand firm in all the will of God, mature and fully assured.”

The Greek word for “wrestling” is agonizomai — a term that denotes intense exertion, struggle, and persistence. It is the same root from which we get the English word agonize. This description shatters the notion of casual or superficial prayer. Intercession is not polite spirituality; it is a fierce, fervent, faith-driven act of spiritual warfare.

hat strikes me is how we've sanitized prayer in our generation. We've transformed this powerful weapon into polite spirituality. We've traded wrestling for wishing, contending for comfortable requests.

But I've witnessed what happens when believers get desperate enough to actually fight in prayer. When we stop maintaining religious routines and start multiplying Kingdom influence through genuine intercession.

Right now, while our culture races toward superficiality and instant gratification, God is calling us back to the deep work of intercession. This isn't just another spiritual discipline to add to our list—this is survival. Ministry leaders, business executives, pastors, parents—wherever you carry influence, that sphere desperately needs the foundation of prayer. Because here's what I've learned: prayer isn't just how we access divine insight or push back darkness. Prayer is how we partner with God to see His purposes break through into earthly reality.

The Call to Intercede: Wrestling in the Spirit

Epaphras was not a passive bystander. Paul describes him as one who is “always wrestling” in prayer. This phrase paints the image of a spiritual athlete or warrior — someone who labors in prayer not out of ritual but out of deep spiritual burden and love.

Intercessory prayer is not about asking God to meet our comforts or preferences. Paul tells us that Epaphras prayed “that you may stand firm in all the will of God, mature and fully assured.” True intercession aligns with the purposes of heaven. It is concerned with maturity, destiny, and spiritual wholeness.

Likewise, in Galatians 4:19, Paul writes:

“My dear children, for whom I am again in the pains of childbirth until Christ is formed in you…”

The Greek word used here — ōdín — refers to the deep pain of labor. This is the spiritual agony of one who is desperate to see transformation birthed in the lives of others. Intercession is not merely spiritual maintenance; it is spiritual midwifery — travailing in prayer until Christ is formed in hearts.

Personal Testimony: The Power of Agonizing Prayer

As a young believer, I remember a season when a close friend of mine began to drift away from God. Nothing I said seemed to make a difference. One night, burdened and desperate, I entered into prayer — not briefly, but intensely. For over three hours I cried, pleaded, and contended before God for my friend’s soul. I wrestled in the spirit — not with my words, but with my heart. Within days, God sovereignly intervened, and that friend experienced a radical encounter that turned their life around. That night marked me forever.

Why Intercession Matters in Every Sphere

Prayer isn't confined to the four walls of a church. Intercession is needed in every area where spiritual influence and transformation are desired.

Ministries and Churches

Prayer sustains the vision, protects the flock, and opens doors for effective ministry. Leaders need intercessors who will labor behind the scenes for their protection, clarity, and spiritual endurance.

Businesses and the Marketplace

Christian leaders in the marketplace must understand that prayer is not just spiritual — it is strategic. Praying for employees, projects, clients, finances, and ethics invites divine wisdom and supernatural favor into everyday decisions.

Families and Homes

Families are under spiritual attack like never before. Interceding for children, spouses, and generational legacy is critical. When parents pray, they build a hedge of protection and shape the spiritual identity of their household.

“It is time to seek the Lord, until He comes and showers His righteousness on you.” — Hosea 10:12
