From Lakes to Rivers: Redefining Success and Multiplying Impact

What if the way we’ve been measuring success in ministry… is completely wrong?

What if bigger isn’t actually better?

That’s the question Larry Walkemeyer wrestled with—and it changed everything. In his powerful book, Flow: Unleashing a River of Multiplication in Your Church, City, and World, Larry shares how God radically flipped the script for his church in North Long Beach, California.

It all started with 39 parking spots.

That’s right. Just 39.

A small church in a tough neighborhood was on the brink of drying up. Like many, they thought their only hope was addition.
More people. More programs. More buildings.

And guess what? It worked—for a while.
They grew fast.
They knocked down walls.
Built balconies.
Won awards for church growth.

By every conventional metric, they had “made it.”

But beneath the surface, something was off.
Volunteers were burned out.
The building was overloaded.
People were beginning to act more like consumers than contributors.

That’s when the Lord began to speak.
